Loose as a goose or mad as a hatter
the mercury's rising and that is the matter
with people today who lack common sense
who go off on a tangent or sit on the fence.
Wrapped around brains with dubious felt
all common sense now just seems to melt.
It's said that good sense is not common today
and sadly it's true what these naysayers say;
but what would they know and what do they care
for common old sense can be found anywhere.
Just stop and take heed when your conscience is pricked
for your inner-man won't let you be tricked!
"Mad as a hatter" is a colloquial English phrase used in conversation to suggest that a person is suffering from insanity. It is believed to emanate from Denton and Stockport, Greater Manchester, where men in the area worked predominantly in the hattery business, which used mercury in the hat making/felting process.
